Theme: Positioning Northern Ireland as a Global Leader in Sustainable Beef Production

This team will focus on how to increasing farm efficiency through better breeding, grass utilisation, multi-species sward and reducing the age of slaughter leads to more sustainable beef production. The future of food production will also be explored. Putting the consumer front & centre of their research, they will look at what consumer trends will shape farming in the future.

Cookstown High School

Theme: The Features of the Northern Ireland Beef Farmer of the Future

This team will delve in to what traits and characteristics are required to be a successful Beef Farmer of the Future - from personal mind-set to the kind of business and lifestyle that supports positive mental health. The support available to farmers to help them achieve success and why farming Angus cattle can contribute to positive outcomes will also be explored.

Newtownhamilton High School

Theme: Sustainable Beef and What it Means to the Young Consumer

This team will research the factors that are important to the young consumer in eating beef and what influences their dietary choices. The facts about the nutritional qualities of beef at various stages of life, in particular during teenage years, will also be determined. The optimum way to communicate recipes & meal ideas that include beef to this age-group will be identified and promoted.

St. Catherine’s College, Armagh

Theme: One Health - the connectivity between people, animals, plants and their shared environment.

This team will investigate the links between animal health, quality food and the environment. The interconnection between animal, human and plant health and their shared environment will be explored. Practical steps that farmers take to reduce their impact on the environment will be highlighted and how these can be promoted on a global scale to create a competitive advantage for beef produced from Northern Irish farms.
