Theme: Sustainable Agriculture Delivering for the Community

This team will be exploring how farmers have to ensure that the decisions they make are Economic, Social and Environmentally Responsible. They will look at what sustainable beef practices are being implemented in beef processing and retailing sectors. How beef farming improves the economic sustainability of a rural community will also be examined and how the Angus breed is ideally suited to family farms in their area.

Dalriada School, Ballymoney

Theme: Opportunities for farming in the future

This team will establish the information required to operate a successful and environmentally friendly beef farm, profiling how best to optimise soil health and fertility to enhance farm income and quality beef production. The importance of farm planning and the knowledge required to complete a farm plan will be promoted. The pupils will also profile the positive effect of education on farmers’ mental health and farm safety.

Friends’ School, Lisburn

Theme: Mitigating carbon through improved bovine genetics

The team will explore how the Angus breed improves sustainability on beef farms. They will look at the benefit to the farmer of using Economic Breeding Values to select better, more efficient animals and how measuring animal performance is a key step in improving efficient beef production They will also explore how consumer choice in the selection of beef can lead more sustainable lifestyles.

St. Kevin’s College, Lisnaskea

Theme: Improving farm outcomes through Education

This team will gather information on what is required to operate an environmentally friendly beef farm and the importance of creating a farm budget. They will explore what educational options are available for those within the farming community in Northern Ireland and the positive effects that education in its broadest sense can have on farming.
