Down High School

Utilising Science to Capture Carbon

The duo representing Down High in Downpatrick are both from farming families in Co. Down. Within school they are encouraged to be resilient learners but also to discover their genuine interests that extend beyond the classroom. They see the ABP Angus Youth Challenge as the perfect opportunity to progress their knowledge and interest in agriculture.

Edward and Frank will be looking at multi-species swards and carbon sequestration.Exploring the ways in which a farmer can improve the carbon sequestration on their farm they will be explaining the importance of measuring on farm performance and its impact on setting targets.

Friends’ School

:

The Value of Technology to Improve Efficiency

These pupils will be researching the value of technology; helping farmers understand the costs associated with adapting technology and sharing information required to operate a successful and environmentally-friendly beef farm. They will also be highlighting the importance of farm planning and the tools needed to complete a farm plan.

Friends’ is an urban school based in Lisburn and this team doesn’t come from a traditional farming background. So they this competition gives them the chance to explore the agri-food sector and the career opportunities it offers.

St Killian’s College:

A Health Approach to Agriculture

St Killian’s is located in Carnlough and has its own working farm. This team all live on farms and love farming in their spare time. The trio will be taking a holistic approach to health in agriculture encompassing mental health, soil health and animal health. This will include the interconnection between the health and diet of the animal and the quality of beef they produce. They will raise awareness of how a farmer’s mental health can be impacted by their way of life and how soil health and animal fertility can enhance farm income and beef production.

Succession Planning for a Successful Future

This team all work on their home farms in their spare time. They want to highlight why farming is important to the fabric of rural areas. Understanding the barriers around succession planning, they will be researching the career options available in the Agricultural sector for young people. They are keen to investigate the challenges that some farmers face regarding succession and come up with innovative solutions to tackle the issue.
